 Mount Kilimanjaro

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the wonder of Africa. The first British explorer who reported this imposing snow capped peak lying almost astride the equator, was ridiculed by his peers for making up fantastic stories. It was not until years later after other explorers confirmed its presence, did the western world believe that such a wonder could exist.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and ranks among the world’s major peaks. At 5,895 m high, its snow capped summit is only about 2,700 m shorter than the peak of Mt. Everest. Like Mt. Everest, Mt. Kilimanjaro is climbed expedition style, with an average of 2 -3 porters for every climber, and like Mt. Everest, climbers must acclimate to the thin air at the top. In fact, the high altitude and the lack of oxygen at the summit is the primary challenge for climbers. It is not a technically difficult mountain, and there is no need to use ice axes, ropes and other specialized climbing gear.  The key is to climb slow and steady and to allow your body to acclimate to the thin air.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is a beautiful mystical mountain, and it draws many climbers every year to attempt the summit. Climbers of all ages from young teens to octogenarians have reached the summit, and you can too if you have the physical stamina and a desire to stand atop the “Roof of Africa”.
